Helsinki metropolitan area public transportation is arranged by HSL. You can find schedules, route information and more from https://www.hsl.fi/en.
Public transportation tickets can be purchased from ticket machines at the transport stations and at the airport by the train station. There are also multiple places to purchase tickets, e.g. all R-Kioski shops.
However, we suggest you to download the HSL-app to your phone https://www.hsl.fi/en/app and buy tickets from there. It's the easiest option.
Remember to purchase tickets before boarding. If you do not have a valid ticket, you are charged a penalty fare of 80 euros and the price of a single ticket.
Overall, public transportation in Helsinki area is very reliable and mostly on time. Do notice that the metro stops running around midnight. During the night you can grab a night bus/tram or a taxi. Taxis in Finland are a reliable option, although a little bit more expensive.
